Open Question: iphone 4 switching phones but not plans?

At the moment I am on a telstra plan in AUSTRALIA using a samsung phone, and the contract doesn't end for a year or so. I am wanting to purchase an apple iphone 4, and saw advertised on the apple website that if its purchased online from their website you can get it unlocked and use any carrier you wish. I was wondering if i bought it from their website, would i be able to put my sim into it? Or does it depend on my carrier, my sim, or any other complications?
